Welcome to a very special double edition of What's Really Happening, your rundown of the month that was (and in this case, the month before that, too) on BowieNet.

Sorry about our absence last month, but we've been having too much fun since September 1 celebrating the first ten years of BowieNet. Now, on with the show...
iSELECTBOWIE iSELECTBOWIE RELEASE DETAILS

The much-discussed iSELECTBOWIE compilation is now officially released by EMI outside of the UK and Ireland, following the limited release through the Mail On Sunday in both those territories.
The complete list of territories in which iSELECTBOWIE is now available can be found here.

For our non-English speaking friends, a page has now been set up for the translations of David's song-by-song notes that accompanied the original release. The translations are courtesy of EMI and you can find the English language notes inside the iSELECTBOWIE booklet.

Click here for our translations page, which contains versions of the notes in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
JEWEL CASE VERSION OF SM 72 RELEASED - SPOT THE DIFFERENCE, WIN A COPY

Live Santa Monica '72 Following the success of the limited edition (which has sold out in many places around the globe), EMI has released the standard jewel case version of David Bowie - Live Santa Monica '72 on October 13th in selected territories.

This version is unnumbered and contains an eight-page booklet, but with none of the extras contained in the limited edition numbered box.

EMI kindly sent us 5 copies of the jewel-cased (but sadly not jewel-encrusted) David Bowie - Live Santa Monica '72 CD and we'll be giving them out to a few eagle-eyed BowieNetters through one of those 'spot the difference' contests that seem so popular.

BowieNet members should head to the BowieNet news section and identify the differences between the two ticket stubs - and use the link on the news page to enter the contest when you've found as many changes as you can.
ZIGGY STARDUST VOTED GAYEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME

Some controversy erupted on BowieNet this month after Out Magazine tapped The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders >From Mars as #1 on its list of "The 100 Greatest, Gayest Albums."

David Bowie / Ziggy Stardust in Out Magazine In any case, Bowie beat out some tough competition for the top spot, including gay community icons Madonna, Morrissey, Elton John and Judy Garland. Here's what Out had to say about the famously nice-assed nazz:

"When in the grand finale, "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide," Bowie wails "Oh no love! You're not alone!" over a sea of theatrical strings, you know he was singing for every exiled, dejected, sexually confused young kid who longed for a world of greater possibilities."

Whether you agree or disagree with the thrust of this piece, Bowie on top is a sight we all like to see.
BOWIE TAPS TV ON THE RADIO FOR WAR CHILD FUNDRAISING ALBUM

The latest fundraising idea from the War Child organization is an album that takes its inspiration from the Bowie track of the same name, "Heroes."

War Child / Heroes The idea behind the project is that a whole bunch of music legends chose one of their own favorite music acts to cover one of their songs. Participants include Duffy (performing Sir Paul McCartney's "Live And Let Die"), Hot Chip (Joy Division's "Transmission"), Beck (Bob Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat") Rufus Wainwright (performing tracks from Brian Wilson's Smile) and The Kooks (covering The Kinks' "Victoria").

Of course, an album called "Heroes" wouldn't be much without a choice version of Bowie's "Heroes." For the album's title track, Bowie tapped TV On The Radio to re-imagine his often-covered tune.

"Heroes" will be released through EMI’s Parlophone label and due to the massive interest in the album, it has now been put back from November 24th to early 2009. This new release date will allow War Child to add further to their historic roll call of musical legends and modern greats.

We'll share more info on this highly promising album in the News coming soon.

Until then, that's What's Really Happening...
